September is recognized as Suicide Prevention Month and is a time to raise awareness, encourage meaningful action, and continue breaking down the stigma around mental health.
In the US, suicide is one of the leading causes of death among individuals ages 10-24. As parents, siblings, or friends, it can feel awkward or unsettling to ask and talk about suicide with those you care about, but it can make all the difference in showing you care. Studies show that people who are having thoughts of suicide feel a sense of relief when someone asks about them in a caring way, dismantling the idea that talking about suicide only makes things worse.
Be willing to ask thoughtful and appropriate questions and talk about suicide with those who might be struggling. Studies have shown this is safe to do and often provides relief that someone else has noticed how they are feeling which can open up honest conversation.
Being open about your own mental health as parents or older siblings can be helpful in letting younger family members know they are not alone. Sharing your experiences can create connection, encourage seeking help, and instill hope that things can get better. Mental health challenges are nothing to be ashamed of and experienced far more commonly than we realize. Asking for help is a sign of strength, and knowing you are not alone can break down the shame around asking for help.
Parents and caregivers can support the youth in their lives by encouraging spending time in spaces and with people they can fully be themselves around. This can be supportive friend groups, online and in-person gaming communities, group therapy or other affirming social spaces.
Showing up for someone who is struggling doesn’t require perfect words, just genuine care, presence, and a willingness to listen. Whether it’s through honest conversations, modeling openness around mental health, or fostering supportive communities, your actions can have a lasting impact. Suicide Prevention Month is a powerful reminder that connection saves lives, not just in September, but every day.
If you or someone you love is in need of support, don’t hesitate to reach out. Help is available, and healing is possible. Together, we can create a culture where it’s safe to speak up, seek help, and find hope.
